Attached Pergolas
What is an attached pergola?
If your deck or patio gets too much sun, it might be too hot to use comfortably. An attached pergola can offer a solution by providing much-needed shade. An attached pergola is supported on one or more sides by being connected to your house or garage. The structure extends out from your building to additional posts, creating a shaded, functional area.

The connection to your home is done with a ledger board and beam brackets. Typically, an attached pergola has only two posts and is sometimes called a 2-post pergola. Various designs are possible, including a one-post, two-sided attachment pergola, or even a no-post pergola with the roof structure mounted using ledger plates on opposite sides.
Benefits of an attached pergola
Attached pergolas reduce the overall footprint needed by eliminating 2 or more posts. Support on one side comes from the attachment points to your building. They are great for integrating with your deck's railing system, with posts installed where railing posts would go. An attached pergola also provides sun protection for windows or doors underneath, acting like an awning to keep your home cooler.
On the south or west side of your house, an attached pergola can shield your home from intense sun, reducing heat inside. They are ideal for decks or patios directly off your home. Cost-wise, attached pergolas are generally cheaper than freestanding ones because fewer posts mean less material, lowering the price.
These pergolas are also popular for commercial use, such as in restaurants, bars, event venues, and pools, offering shade during the day and an attractive ambiance at night.
Design & Customization
True North Pergolas offers two main design styles for vinyl pergola kits. Traditional Style pergolas have a classic look with exposed beams and rafters that overhang the posts. Modern Style pergolas feature a sleek design with rafters contained within the beams, creating a boxy, contemporary appearance. Standard options for attached pergolas include color choices, various standard and custom sizes, different levels of shade, post widths and styles, trim options, end caps, and extras like fan mounts or hurricane clips.
Installation Process
Installing an attached pergola is straightforward with our detailed guide or YouTube video series. Start by attaching the ledger board to your structure, then mount the remaining posts to your deck, concrete, or landscape columns. Posts can also be set into the ground if you're not using a solid concrete or deck base. Once the posts are in place, install the beams, followed by the rafters, which are secured to the ledger board and beams. Next, attach the purlin holders to the rafters, slide the purlins through, and finish by installing the end caps (for traditional style pergolas).
Add any extra features like fan mounts or hurricane clips, then relax and enjoy your new pergola! Installation typically takes 1-2 days, depending on your carpentry skills and the number of helpers. Ideally, two people should work on the installation, but it can be done by one. If you need help, our team is just a phone call or email away.
