Modern Pergolas

What are Modern Pergolas?

Modern Pergola Kits feature the same durable extruded aluminum supports and premium vinyl exterior as traditional pergolas but with a sleek, updated design. If your home has a contemporary style, a Modern Style Pergola might be the perfect fit for your outdoor living space. Unlike traditional pergolas where the rafters and shade purlins extend beyond the edges and have exposed end caps, a Modern pergola has these elements fully enclosed within the beams for clean sight lines.

Design and Customization

Modern Pergolas come in both free-standing and attached options. Attached pergolas connect directly to your home or another structure, while free-standing pergolas are self-supporting and can be installed almost anywhere. They make a great addition to outdoor kitchens, dining areas, or comfortable seating spaces by the pool.

One of the key benefits of a Custom Pergola by True North is the ability to choose your shade level. Similar to a louvred roof, the angled shade purlins help block sunlight. The standard option provides 75% shade with purlins spaced 4 inches apart. For less shade, the 50% option has purlins spaced 6 inches apart, while the 90% option offers the most coverage with purlins spaced 3 inches apart.

Modern pergolas have fewer post size options, available in 7-inch square posts with or without a trim ring. Round or 5-inch square posts are not available for this style. You can choose between a white pergola or our Sandstone Tan color. White is a versatile choice that complements dark or rich home colors and white trim, while Sandstone Tan is ideal for homes with off-white trim or warmer tones.

Our pergolas are easy to customize with additional features like a fan or overhead light pendant, enhancing your outdoor living experience.

Installation Process

Modern pergolas can be installed in various locations around your home or backyard. Their lightweight materials make them perfect for deck installations, patios, or landscape column tops. For installations in garden areas or over landscape pavers, you'll need to create footings in the ground for the posts.

Our instruction manual provides step-by-step guidance for all installation scenarios. Once your aluminum posts are installed, vinyl post sleeves slide over them. After the posts or ledger are in place, you can add the perimeter box beams, followed by the rafters, and then the purlin holders. Finally, the shade purlins are slid through the holders and secured with screws.

Most installations take about a day for an experienced carpenter or two days for a handy homeowner, meaning you can have a new pergola ready to enjoy in less than a weekend.

Maintenance and Care

Modern pergolas require minimal maintenance. The aluminum inserts are incredibly strong, eliminating concerns about rotting, warping, or rusting. The durable vinyl exterior only needs an occasional spray down with a hose or a quick scrub with a Mister Clean Magic Eraser to remove scuffs. It's truly a "set it and forget it" structure!

Modern pergolas, with their enclosed roof structure, offer a sleek alternative to traditional pergolas, enhancing any modern outdoor living space.
